Attitude is a little thing that makes a
big difference
Winston Churchill
ERGO
doesn't focus either on a limited and restricted community
approach or a project based approach, both which are widespread and far
from efficient as they increase a dangerous dependency and create a
client-provider relationship. ERGO focuses on Roma empowerment based on
a strong grassroots Roma movement. Convincing the majority Roma
population to participate in a movement able to solve the Roma issue is
in the interest not just of Roma but also of the majority.
Transparency, winning team attitude and professionalism,
connecting with the European initiatives as well as influencing
mainstream attitudes towards Roma are some of the pillars of ERGO.
All initiatives on Roma, of governments and others, are vulnerable
in a climate of strong, persistent and increased Anti-Gypsyism.
Without a change in attitude on the part of the majority of Roma but
also majority population, there will be no sustainable improvement in
the situation of Roma.
The
tasks ahead of us are hard, long and difficult undertakings. We can only
be effective if the grassroots initiatives are transformed first into a
movement and second (but at the same time) into policy measures which
understand the drivers of the discrimination that our Roma communities
face, and design strategies that can change these views, build support
for change, and create an environment that allows Roma to flourish, as
other parts of the populations should. The ultimate goal is to create an
inclusive Roma movement based on the ideals of human rights and on
strong grassroots support.
