The European Roma Grassroots Organizations (ERGO) Network is announcing the opening of the

VACANCY for a Junior Information and Advocacy Officer of the ERGO Network

Announcement of the vacancy, starting October 2009.

The European Roma Grassroots Organizations (ERGO) Network is a network of 8 Roma organisations, focused on the empowerment and mobilisation of Roma grassroots by enabling a long term sustainable process that ensures full participation of Roma to become independent and self-secure citizens of their societies.

ERGO’s primary function is advocacy on Roma Grassroots Empowerment towards the EU institutions and EU member states. Also it ensures that ERGO members are kept fully informed about developments in European policies, programmes and practices.

Junior Position

We are looking for a young professional for the position of Junior Information and Advocacy Officer that will actively advocate for inclusion of Roma Grassroots Empowerment principles into EU policies towards the EU institutions. It concerns a junior position, meaning there will be coaching and training to grow into the position and to work pro-active and independent after a period of 1 year.

The Officer will be based in Brussels, will work closely together with the Policy and Advocacy Officer and will be accountable towards the Board of ERGO.

Job Description

Advocacy tasks:

- To map and analyse relevant EU and International developments in regards to Roma issues, including proposals and implementation of policies, programmes and legislation, action plans, strategies, practical cooperation etc. for EU member countries

- To monitor and influence relevant EU developments in the area of Roma issues and to promote the ERGO mission with the European Institutions, Intergovernmental Organisations and other relevant stakeholders;

Information tasks

- To work closely together with the Policy and Advocacy Officer to:

- disseminate (in an easy to understand and use format) relevant information concerning European policies to ERGO members

- write information-sheets and reports targeting the European Institution

- promote the ERGO mission and build connections with relevant institutions in Europe and EU Member States Member States.

- To establish and consolidate an information and knowledge sharing platform between the European Institutions and the Grassroots Roma in EU countries (Bulgaria, Romania and Slovakia) where ERGO members operate:

   a. provide ERGO members with relevant information concerning European policies and assist them to facilitate the maximum use of such information at the grassroots level

   b. assist ERGO members to assess the impact of national and European policies at grassroots level in their countries and to disseminate findings on impact of these policies towards the European level;

- To elaborate an impact studies based on ERGO’s members experiences

- Update the website of ERGO

Key qualifications

- Experience with and knowledge of Roma issues and policies on the European level;

- Have a network with representatives of relevant organisations and institutions;

- Eagerness to develop a strategic and analytic ability to advocate efficiently for Roma Policies;

- Basic knowledge of the functioning of the EU institutions and of NGO work on a European level;

- Understanding of and commitment to Grassroots Roma Empowerment and with the aims and mission of the ERGO network;

- Good interpersonal, written and oral communication;

- Ability to represent the interest of the ERGO network;

Conditions

The Junior Information and Advocacy Officer will be assigned for 5 days a week, starting from October 2009. The contract will be 6 months in the first instance with a three months probation period. The salary will be according to experience.
