Ergo Network call for a “Wall Free Europe” at the “European Youth Event 2014” in Strasbourg

From May 9 until  May 11 the European Parliament invites 5.000-10.000 young people from all over Europe  to Strasbourg for the European Youth Event 2014. The European Youth Forum and many youth organizations organize workshops, discussions with politicians, and a youth festival.

ERGO Network, Phiren Amenca and ternYpe will participate with a delegation of twenty young Roma and non-Roma to the Youth Event. Together we designed a number of actions that will raise-awareness on the walls that have been built in Europe to segregate Roma Citizens from their non-Roma neighbors, to mobilize young people ahead of the European elections to participate, to vote, to block the raise of the far-right parties,to foster the volunteering as a social tool for change.  As thousands of young people are coming to Strasbourg this will be an unique opportunity to spread our values and attract, engage and mobilize more people in a call for a ‘Wall Free Europe’.

“we built a wall, we work on a flashmob because we want to show to the people that Roma Youth exist, that is active and we stand for Roma Dignity!” said Atanas Stojanov, CEU Students from Phiren Amenca.

It is crucial that young Roma can participate in the European Youth debate and share their “idea for a better Europe” in times of social and economic crisis. A recent  Eurobarometer poll[1] commissioned by the European Parliament shows that over half of Europe’s young people (57%) feel that the crisis has left them marginalized and excluded from economic and social life and an overwhelming majority of respondents (70%)  agree that their country’s membership in the EU is vital in the context of globalization. It is therefore essential strengthen the relation between young Roma and non-Roma to discuss and design together their common future.

“We must create the space for Roma Youth to be able to advocate with their peers and European Institutions, to be part and design the policies that are targeting theme. And the European Youth Event is the right place for the young Roma to raise the voice and speak-up!” said Ruus Dijksterhuis.
