1st of June Budapest

Speak out!”

In the frame of the 2nd  Budapest Roma Festival, on 1 June at 14.00 hour the Hungarian Academy of Science host the Conference” Speak out!” . Chaired by Szilveszter Vizi E. – the president of the Academy and in close cooperation with the Roma organisation “Roma Parliament” lead by Jeno Zsigo the conference focuses on the the problems facing  Roma their participation to decision making and designing of policies and the existing opportunities. It will be the first time ever when Roma intellectuals – who are also activists, enrolled in civil movement for a long time – have the chance to evaluate the impact of policies and initiatives targeting Roma communities and Roma civil society.  

Why and how the Roma became scapegoats – what lead to this situation - which is the way out – how could we create a new perspective for the Hungarian nation? – are the main points of Agnes Daroczi – one of the Roma speakers at the conference.

6- 7 of June Budapest

Minority Rights Group International (MRG) organises the conference entitled “The European Union and the Roma” which will take place in Budapest , Hungary , 6 – 7 June 2006.  

Objectives

 

The conference aims at bringing together policy-makers and experts from Roma NGOs and international organisations.

 

Firstly, it will explore the relevance of EU legislation to Roma rights with the aim of identifying existing gaps in EU legislation the legal developments that are necessary to adequately and comprehensively address the plight of Romani communities in Europe .

 

Secondly, it will analyze the existing Roma policy framework at the European level with the aim of formulating recommendations for consistency and complimentarity between different initiatives targeting the Roma directly or indirectly.

 

Finally, it will provide an overview and critical analysis of the existing channels for monitoring and evaluation of Roma policies and programmes as well as recommendations for more participatory monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.
